Mission
Statement
“To provide promotion and marketing consulting
services to the independent record label and musician
within the recording industry and to provide current
and accurate music business education information to
the music industry professional, artist, songwriter
and musician.”
Shirley A. Washington, President/Owner
Shirley A. Washington is president/owner of Clefnotes
Media, Inc. She is also Assistant Director of the Music
Business Program at the Steinhardt School of Education
at New York University. teaches a graduate level course
in Promotion and Publicity in the Recording Industry
and an adjunct professor at Ramapo College in Mahwah,
N.J. where she teaches The Business of Music and Advanced
Business of Music. Shirley received her B.A. from Fordham
University, a J. D. from Howard University Law School
and an M.B.A. from New York University’s Stern
Business School. She has worked on both the creative
as well as the business side of the recording industry.
Shirley has written extensively on topics in the recording
industry first as a contributing writer to the Black
Entertainment and Sports Advisors (BESLA) newsletter
and was former editor-in-chief of In Sync, the newsletter
published by Women In Music, Inc. and Just About Music
(formerly AARA magazine) a newsletter that provided
music business education to the new artist and recording
industry professional. In the summer of 2002 she published
“The ABC’s of Starting Our Own Independent
Record Label” a book used extensively in Music
Business classes and seminars all over the country.
